Beverly Ridge C.C. swimmers had a great season. Medals were given for many accomplishments. From the most improved swimmer to the best back stroke. Watchout Mark Spitz! (Does anyone remember Mark Spitz besides me?)
News from the Ridge Beverly All-Stars 8 girls
Ridge Beverly All-Stars 8 and under girls competed in a softball tournament last week, Wed. July 18 - Sun. July 22, at Flossmore Park in Flossmore. Although the league usually doesn't have an all-star team at the pee-wee level, a team was assembled with a few girls from each team when we were invited to participate in the tournament. Participating in the tournament were Olivia Kocol and Melissa Smith from the Muckdogs, Cassidy Allen and Delaney from the Riverdogs, Raina Emery, Maeve Fitzgerald, Mia Hayes, Anne Murnane from the Rattlers, Averie Miller, Margaret Millerick, Maggie Cranley, Maggie O'Brien from the Rockhounds, Hope Orsi, Mary Cate Walsh and Bridie Schmaltz from the Bay Bears.
The outstanding coaches were Lisa and Matt Miller (Rockhounds) and Jenny Fitzgerald and Sarah Murnane from the Rattlers. All coaches gave the girls direction, encouragement and tons of praise to ensure that they were having a blast.
Our team, named the Rattlers (because we had enough Jerseys left over from the spring season) played in 4 games. The suburban teams that we played pitched extremely fast underhand, so our girls got to experience playing at a faster speed. Although the Rattlers lost all 4 games, everyone had a wonderful experience. The park was impressive, with bleacher seating, awesome concession stand, music in between innings, an umpire and an announcer belting out the names of the girls as they went up to bat. "Announcing Melissa Smitty Smith up to the plate."
I was so proud of the excellent sportsmanship of our little Beverly athletes as they kept trying their best against these advanced teams. In their regular season, stealing bases and running on overthrows weren't allowed, so they had to learn a new set of rules. They all worked together as a team, and gave each other plenty of encouragement. They improved dramatically in just a few days and will be a force to be reckoned with next spring. - Submitted by Karen S.
