The List
By Caroline Connors
After the reckless abandon of the holiday season—eating, drinking and spending too much, thereby seriously diminishing my daily productivity standards—the New Year is a welcome, albeit sobering, time of the year.
The cold, gray days of January are the perfect backdrop to get organized and get some plans laid for the months ahead. The kids are at school, there is no work to be done in the yard and my shopping quotient was fulfilled in December, so why not set up a new home filing system while reflecting on ways to become the fabulous person I was destined to be if only I had more time?
Many people find that lists are a useful tool for setting goals and staying focused. The media is bursting with lists of all kinds, including words and phrases that are in/out, top 10 places to see before you die and fashion pitfalls to avoid, but my needs are a little more basic. Therefore, I have compiled my own list of lists (and sub-lists) that, once created, will help me in my goal of complete achieving complete mental, physical and financial nirvana.
Music, books and movies:
List of songs to download on my new iPod
Music for parties
- Dinner parties
- Cocktail parties
- Dance parties
- Themed parties
- Children’s parties
- Music to put on in the car when I don’t like what’s on the radio or to drown out sound of children bickering
Music for exercise
- Strength (must have throbbing bass beat and ridiculous lyrics, i.e. “What A Man” by Salt ‘n Pepa)
- Cardio (requires upbeat melody and words that I can sing along to, i.e. “Born to Run” by Bruce Springsteen or any song by Abba)
List of books that I would like to read in 2009
Selections for book club discussions
- Classics that I “read” in high school and college but don’t remember
- Books for pleasure
- Books that I can get from library
- Books that need to be returned to library
- Books that need to be purchased
- Borders
- Amazon
Movies
- List of movies to rent that I haven’t seen (i.e. “The Godfather”) which, upon viewing, will help me feel more “with it” during trivia games and cocktail party conversation
- List of television shows to watch (i.e. none)
Dining, travel and leisure:
List of vacation spots
- Family vacations
- Vacations I will take when my kids are grown
List of restaurants that I want to try

- Things to do when we can afford it (i.e. order the $60 plastic handle for the microwave oven)
List of non-priority household tasks that I never think of when I have extra time but will stay up half the night doing when the mood/compulsion hits me
List of flowers to purchase and their planting locations for spring and fall
List of current magazine subscriptions and their expiration dates so that I don’t get multiple copies when I renew during my kids’ magazine drives
List of photos to print off of the computer and store in an album
List of user names and passwords for my different online bill accounts so I don’t get locked out after attempting to sign-in 15 times
List of updates to install on computer so that I don’t get a virus that wipes out my hard drive
List of non-urgent phone calls to make/return (i.e. “a 15 minute phone call could save you 15 percent on your car insurance”)
Health and Fitness:
List of exercises that I want to do at home to target different areas of the body
List of blood types for family members
List of instructions for babysitters
List of instructions in event of a fire
Other/General:
List of charities to send donations
List of story ideas for different publications
List of words I want to look up in dictionary
List of inspirational, multi-functional quotations
List of things that I forgot to tell my husband because I didn’t want to bother him while he was at work (“About that dent in the car. . .”)
List of funny/poignant things that my children say that I want to remember
I know I am forgetting things and for each item that I cross off my list, there is surely one to replace it. But that’s the beauty of life—there’s so much to be experienced, with or without a list. Just do it. Happy New Year to all!
