On the 9100 block of South Western, there is a real treasure!

Beverly Bike Shop

Calling All Bikers

After watching the recent bike race swoosh through the streets of Beverly we began to wonder what it would be like to do a little swooshing ourselves. Okay, maybe not swooshing but you get the idea. I took a ride over to our very own bike shop at 9121 S. Western Avenue. Beverly Bike and Ski is an authentic bike shop not a bike boutique like you might find in Lincoln Park. I was impressed immediately by the attention and complete selection they have on site. You might wonder how many things they can have besides bikes. Beverly Bike carries an assortment of shoes, bells, gloves, grips, pumps, glasses, water bottles, helmets, padded shorts, padded seats, flashing lights and oh yeah… bikes. Anything and everything bike related they seem to have.

I was greeted by the owner Jim who eagerly gave me some vital information for bikers. When asked what the most important things to have he answered for safety; flashing lights and for comfort; a ladies bike seat. I came to find out there is quite a difference between men’s and ladies seats. For some odd reason the ladies seats are shorter and wider, and more padded, this sounded like a must have for me. Jim also suggests on most rides to carry a water bottle and wear a helmet. Jim says his favorite bike paths include the lakefront with parking at 31st street an riding as far north as your legs will take you. I have done this ride and like to park my bike at Millennium Park and enjoy lunch there. There are lots of places to lock bikes. Jim reports he really enjoys riding on Old Plank Road which parallels route 30 and runs from Chicago Heights to Joliet. This is a nice straight path and a 45 minute ride will take you to Frankfort for lunch.

Another of his favorites is The Tinley Creek Trail. You can pick this trail up at 165th and Central. This trail tunnels under Harlem Avenue so there is no major traffic hassle. For more information, maps and rules of the road please stop in the shop or contact them at BeverlyAllSeasons They also rent cross country skis, snow shoes and will tune up down hill skis. Beverly bike and ski is a treasure in our neighborhood.

Jim would like everyone to be aware of the Beverly Bike Club that meets on Thursday evenings at Starbucks on 103rd and Longwood for a weekly ride.
